Several people were killed in an attack near a synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba. A security guard shot colleagues and believers. The same synagogue was the target of an al Qaeda attack in 2002.

Several people were killed in an attack in front of Africa’s oldest synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba. According to the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior, the crime happened during an annual Jewish pilgrimage.

According to the authorities, the perpetrator was a security officer. He first shot a colleague and took his ammunition. Then he went to the Ghriba synagogue and shot indiscriminately. Two believers and another security guard were fatally injured. The attacker was eventually killed by security forces.

No information on the possible motive

According to the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the believers killed were a Frenchman and a Tunisian. The authorities initially gave no motive for the crime.

According to the organizers, more than 5,000 people took part in this year’s pilgrimage to the Ghriba Synagogue. Among the pilgrims were many believers from Tunisia, but also from European countries, the USA and Israel.

In 2002, 20 people, including 14 German tourists, were killed in an attack by the Islamist terrorist organization Al Qaeda on the same synagogue. Since then, the church has been strictly monitored.
