Brussels firefighters were the target of fireworks on Saturday evening in the north of the capital, their spokesperson Walter Derieuw said on Sunday. Although no injuries were reported, the emergency services condemned what, according to them, looked like an ambush.
The incident occurred on avenue de l’Arbre ballon shortly before 8:30 p.m. “A fire crew was called to an outdoor fire. When she arrived, she discovered two containers of waste on fire,” said Mr. Derieuw. “When our colleagues got out of their vehicle to carry out the extinguishing work, they were directly targeted by horizontal fireworks. The emergency services took shelter and left the scene, the smoldering fire in the containers did not present a risk of spreading.”
When the police arrived on the scene, the perpetrators fled. The police then set regarding finishing putting out the fire.
“The adjutant in charge during this intervention by the firefighters had the strong impression that it was an ambush,” continued the spokesperson for the Brussels emergency services. “Fortunately, no injuries or damage to the intervention vehicle have been reported,” he concluded, emphasizing the incomprehension within the firefighters in the face of this act of violence.
