The Federal Government’s recent commitment to microelectronics is essential for digitalization, green energy transition, sustainable growth and technological independence for Europe

Leoben (OTS) The Styrian microelectronics manufacturer AT&S welcomes the federal government’s announcement that it will allocate three billion euros to investments in the domestic microelectronics industry by 2031. These funds are an important step towards technological independence for Europe and create the basis for sustainable growth in key economic sectors of the future.

The current draft budget stipulates that the domestic microelectronics industry will be funded with a total of three billion euros over the next seven years. The new budget, which will be finalized in November, also includes additional funds from the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs amounting to 50 million euros, which will increase the funds available in Austria for the European funding program IPCEI ME/CT (II) ( Important Projects of Common European Interest) will increase to 255 million euros.

“Austria is a leading location in Europe in the field of microchips, which means that future-oriented jobs will be expanded in the long term and prosperity will be generated. With almost three billion euros to be invested in the coming years, we can support research and new investments by semiconductor companies along the entire value chain in Austria.”said Economics Minister Martin Kocher last week.

AT&S has long been trying to create internationally competitive conditions for the microelectronics industry in Austria. “We are pleased regarding the government’s clear commitment to the industrial policy focus on microelectronics. Without microelectronics there is no digitalization, no green energy transition and no sustainable growth. If Europe and Austria want to survive in global competition, we have to create the right conditions. Such courageous investments in Austria, in conjunction with the European funding programs, are a good basis. Now we have to continue working to build up know-how and capacity along the entire value chain.”says AT&S CEO Andreas Gerstenmayer on the national holiday.

Styrian heart for Europe’s microelectronics

The additional funds complement the investments of AT&S, which will be made as part of the European IPCEI programs and in the future as part of the chips act. The first IPCEI for microelectronics, which AT&S has recently successfully completed, led to the development of energy-saving energy supply for electric cars and a new recycling system for copper, which is already successfully used in the AT & S plant in Leoben.

The second IPCEI for microelectronics ME/CT (II) is currently running and now provides Austrian companies with a total of 225 million euros for research, development and building up industrial capacities. As part of IPCEI ME/CT (II), AT&S is investing more than half a billion euros in building a research and production center for IC substrate and packaging technologies in Leoben that is unique in Europe.
