ATP Shanghai Masters 2024 is one of the nine ATP 1000 events in the men’s tennis season. For the uninitiated, an ATP Masters 1000 event or the ATP Masters event is the highest-rated event after the Grand Slams and the ATP Finals. The ATP Shanghai Masters is one of the five ATP Masters events played on the hard court. It replaced the Madrid Open in the eighth slot of the year in 2009, thus becoming the latest entrant in the list of the ATP Masters. It is an outdoor event, even though the stadium has a retractable roof and was an indoor event until 2008.
Shanghai Masters 2024 is the only ATP Masters event not to have been played in the continents of Europe and North America. It is also one of the only three ATP Masters events not to have a WTA event, Monte-Carlo Masters and Paris Masters are the other two such events.
The tournament, like this year, is always played in the first two weeks of October. The 2024 tournament will be the 13th edition, with the tournament put to a three-year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 restrictions in China.
Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena is the venue for the tournament. Novak Djokovic (four) has the most singles titles to his name while Swiss legend Roger Federer (at 36 years 2 months and 7 days) is the oldest-ever singles champion.
Polish ace Hubart Hurkacz is the defending champion in the men’s singles event whereas the Spain-Argentina duo Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos won the men’s doubles event in 2023. Hurkacz has withdrawn from the 2024 edition, and hence, won’t be defending his title.
