Atlético Mineiro beat River in the first semifinal of the Libertadores

Brasilia.-The Brazilian team humiliated the Argentine team 3-0 in the first leg of the Conmebol Libertadores 2024 semifinal.

Deyverson, twice, and Paulinho were the scorers of the night at the Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte and the rematch will be in a week, at the Monumental stadium.

The match began with a setback for Marcelo Gallardo’s team, as Marcos Acuña suffered an injury during the warm-up, forcing Enzo Díaz to take his place in the starting lineup. Despite this unexpected change, River Plate tried to maintain control of the game, but encountered a rival who knew how to anticipate and cut off their circuits.

The development of the game was complicated from the beginning for River. In an early play, a Deyverson goal was disallowed for offside, but the VAR did not intervene in a controversial play that involved a possible handball in the area by Leandro González Pirez. Until at 21 minutes, Hulk assisted Deyverson, who managed to beat goalkeeper Franco Armani and opened the scoring.

The second half continued to be unfavorable for the Argentine team, which could never find its rhythm. Atlético Mineiro was the one who kept up the pressure and took advantage of their opportunities. The lack of fluid play and the intensity of the home team further complicated River Plate’s aspirations, which ended up suffering two more goals: Deyverson finished off a cross after an excellent clearance by Guilherme Arana in the 69th minute, while Paulinho put the final numbers to the 73′.

This result left River Plate very compromised and in a difficult position for the second leg, where they will need to turn the score around to keep their hopes of advancing to the final of the continental tournament alive.Infobae.
