A unusual invasion of River Plate fans in DivinópolisCentral-West region of Minas Gerais, resulted in confusion this Monday (21), the eve of the duel with Atlético, at Arena MRV, in Belo Horizonte, in the semi-final of the Copa Libertadores.

Throughout the night, River fans clashed with Atletico fans. As a minority, the Argentines got the worst of it. Images circulating on social media show two Millonarios followers being beaten on one of the streets in the center of Divinópolis.

The Military Police were called to respond to the incident and found that an Argentine fan had broken his nose.

A bus with River fans arrived in the morning at the River Palace hotel, in the city in the interior of Minas Gerais. Throughout the day, Argentines had fun on the streets of Divinópolis and frequented bars.

The city is 120km away from the capital of Minas Gerais, the location of this Tuesday’s decisive match, at 9:30 pm, in the Libertadores semi-final.

In total, the Argentines have already traveled 2,640km to the city and will still have to arrive in BH for the start.

It is worth mentioning that Divinópolis is known for its lively nightlife, as it receives many university students and young people from all regions of Minas. According to the most recent data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released on August 29, Divinópolis has a population of 242,328 inhabitants.

A Wild Night in Divinópolis: River Plate Fans Bring the Party… and a Punch-Up!

Well, well, well, if it isn’t the beautiful game stirring up a bit of chaos yet again! This Monday, just a stone’s throw away from the serene streets of Divinópolis—a name that might sound like a character from a Dickens novel—Argentinian River Plate fans took a little detour on their way to the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t all samba and sunshine!

¡Viva la Confusión!

As excitement brewed for the much-anticipated showdown between River Plate and Atlético, it seems some tailor-made football fever turned into a right hullabaloo. The night saw passionate (or perhaps a tad overly enthusiastic) River fans clashing with their Atlético counterparts. Picture this: a group of Argentinians enjoying the local nightlife suddenly finding themselves in a not-so-friendly game of dodgeball—only the balls were fists!

Social media lit up faster than a disco ball at a Saturday night special, showcasing images of two unfortunate Millonarios fans getting more than just ‘local hospitality.’ It’s not every day that a broken nose becomes a souvenir, but hey, it’s all part of the "atmosphere," right?

The Embassy of River Plate

Now, let’s backtrack. Before the pre-match melee, these River Plate fans had all the makings of a tourism brochure. They arrived at the River Palace hotel, know an establishment that’s definitely not on the cheap side, and apparently decided that the key to enjoying Divinópolis meant hitting the streets and, perhaps, a few bars? A commendable plan until someone accidentally ordered a "punch" rather than a pint! Who needs a peaceful night when you can throw in a bit of mayhem for flavor?

With Divinópolis being a mere 120km away from the capital, it’s surprising that they managed to muster up the energy to go out after a whopping 2,640km of travel. I mean, at this rate, they could have just about walked to the moon!

Divinópolis: The Unlikely Hotspot

For those who might have thought that Divinópolis is best known for its charming local vibes—hosts of college students and lively bars—think again! There’s now a footnote in the nightlife history of Divinópolis that might as well read “Brawling River Plate Fans: they really know how to make an entrance!”

In the words of every tongue-in-cheek commentator: you simply can’t make this sort of chaos up! If you thought that the only things in Minas Gerais were coffee and cheese, well, think again! Now we’ve got high-stakes football, a side of fan rivalry, and an unintentional staging of “Fight Club: The Copa Libertadores Edition.”

What’s Next?

And, just like that, the tension culminates as the River Plate team prepares for their grande finale against Atlético on Tuesday at Arena MRV. Will the next chapter consist of passionate cheers or more fisticuffs? Because, let’s be realistic—one side’s ultimate glory is often another’s misfortune, and every match is just an excuse for more chaos.

So here’s to the impending battle on the pitch, where emotions often run higher than one’s tolerance for craft beer! Will the River fans drown their sorrows in defeat or celebrate their potential victory? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for certain: football fans around the world will be watching—and you know they’ll be asking, “What’s the next ridiculous chapter in this football narrative?”

So grab your popcorn, tune in, and keep your fingers crossed (or hands at the ready if you find yourself out in the streets of Divinópolis)! Football is about to get gloriously unpredictable once again!
