MADRID, Feb 16 (Archyde.com) – Atlético de Madrid, current LaLiga champions, fell 1-0 at home to Levante on Wednesday, who only got their second win of the season.
Gonzalo Melero’s second-half goal handed Atlético their sixth defeat in 10 league games, compounding their problems a week before hosting Manchester United in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
Atlético, who had come from behind at home once morest Valencia and Getafe in the last month, thought they had equalized when Ángel Correa scored with a spectacular overhead kick in stoppage time.
But the goal was disallowed for José Giménez’s foul on Martín Cáceres and Correa received a yellow card for his angry reaction to the decision.
Diego Simeone’s team missed the opportunity to overtake Barcelona in fourth place and finished fifth in the standings with 39 points. Levante remained at the bottom of the table, but rose to 14 points, 10 from leaving the relegation zone.
