Atlantic City Mayor and School Superintendent Charged with Physically and Emotionally Abusing Teenage Daughter

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – The mayor of Atlantic City, Marty Small Sr., and his wife, La’Quetta Small, who is the superintendent of the city’s school district, are facing charges of “physically and emotionally abusing” their teenage daughter, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. The couple has been charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, while Mayor Small also faces additional charges of Terroristic Threats, Aggravated Assault, and Simple Assault. Superintendent Small has been charged with three separate counts of Simple Assault.

The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred during December 2023 and January 2024. The investigation reveals that Mayor Small reportedly hit his daughter multiple times in the head with a broom, rendering her unconscious. In another incident, he allegedly threatened to harm his daughter, making severe threats such as throwing her down the stairs and physically assaulting her. Furthermore, Mayor Small is accused of repeatedly punching his daughter in the legs, resulting in visible bruising.

Superintendent Small is accused of punching her daughter multiple times in the chest, leaving bruises. She is also alleged to have dragged her daughter by her hair and struck her with a belt, causing marks. In an argument, she allegedly punched her daughter in the mouth.

The charges once morest the Smalls focus on their family issues and do not claim any public corruption or failure to discharge Mayor Small’s duties. Their attorney, Ed Jacobs, addressed the charges, emphasizing that the allegations pertain to the family and not the mayor’s role in the city.

The Atlantic City community has been shocked by these charges, which emerged just two weeks following a search warrant was executed at Mayor Small’s residence. The mayor had earlier held a news conference to clarify that the search was related to a private family matter and not a criminal investigation. He expressed that he and his wife have been actively engaged with state child welfare authorities and have nothing to hide.

The Mayor’s family attended the news conference but remained silent and left before its conclusion. The same day as the search, the principal of Atlantic City High School, Constance Days-Chapman, was arrested for failure to report child abuse allegations brought forward by a student. Mayor Small referred to Days-Chapman as a dear friend and expressed support for her, stating that she had done nothing wrong. Days-Chapman, apart from her role as principal, holds positions of importance within Atlantic City’s Democratic Committee and was involved in Mayor Small’s reelection campaign in 2021.

These shocking developments have raised concerns within the community and shed light on the crucial need for prompt reporting of child abuse allegations. It underscores the responsibility of educators and individuals in positions of authority to not only address such issues internally but also report them to the appropriate authorities.

Child abuse cases bring to the forefront the significance of child welfare laws and the legal repercussions for those who fail to protect children under their care. They also highlight the importance of promoting a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of abuse, both within families and educational institutions.

These recent events can serve as a wake-up call for society to reevaluate its approach to child protection. It is crucial to create an environment where children feel safe and supported, free from any form of abuse or violence. This includes fostering a culture that encourages open dialogue, education on recognizing signs of abuse, and implementing effective reporting mechanisms.

In a broader context, incidents like these underscore the importance of empathy, understanding, and accountability within leadership positions. Leaders in both public and private sectors should uphold high ethical standards and demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of those they serve.

Looking to the future, it is essential for communities to prioritize the protection and welfare of children. This involves continual education and training for professionals working with children, as well as creating safe spaces where children can freely express concerns and seek help.

As society progresses, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that no child suffers in silence. By standing together once morest child abuse and providing avenues of support, we have the power to shape a brighter and safer future for every child.
