ATLANTA — Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez, the 2018 MLS MVP winner, will miss six to eight weeks of action after undergoing knee surgery.
Atlanta United confirmed Friday that Martinez underwent arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday to remove debris from his right knee. The procedure was planned after Martinez, who complained of discomfort, was examined Monday at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Martinez had surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in March 2020. He underwent three more surgeries to remove scar tissue.
Martinez led Atlanta United to the MLS Cup in 2018.
He scored 19 goals in 2017, set a record with 31 in 2018, before going on to 27 in 2019 and 12 in 2021.
