ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – New data shows violent crime has gone down in almost every Atlanta neighborhood.
Overall, violent crime declined significantly between 2009 and 2023 in most neighborhood planning units (NPU). That’s according to crime statistics from the Atlanta Police Department’s Open Data Portal analyzed by the group 33°nwhich is managed by the Research and Analytics Division of the Atlanta Regional Commission.
Following a steady decline that began in 2009, there was an uptick in violent crime rates starting in 2018, but even with the increase, “the violent crime rate never exceeded its 2017 level and has since dropped to a new historic low in 2023,” the group said.
The data shows “violent crime rates are at or near their historic lows in almost every NPU,” according to 33°n, which added “the areas in the northern part of the city that might have seceded if the General Assembly had approved the proposed referendum last year” remain the safest parts of Atlanta.
Homicide rates rose overall from 2009 to 2023, but declined starting in 2022, which the group said was “largely attributable to a subsiding of pandemic-related conditions that led to the rise in homicides nationwide.”
They added that “improved targeting of police resources over the last couple of years has likely helped as well.”
The group found homicides rose steadily in their share of total violent crime over the entire period until the trend reversed in 2023.
“In other words, while violent crimes were becoming less frequent over time, it was increasingly likely that a violent crime would turn deadly — likely a function of the type of weapon used,” 33°n said.
The group said the decline in homicides “is a sign that police efforts to get guns off the streets may be bearing fruit.”
“This will be a trend to watch for in 2024,” the group said.
Property crimes have also declined significantly since 2009, though the property crime rate has seen an uptick starting in 2021. There was a steep increase between 2022 and 2023, which 33°n attributed to a sharp rise in auto thefts.
“In the final analysis, most crime is down in the City of Atlanta, and that is especially true for the most serious crimes,” 33°n said. “Perceptions are currently lagging behind reality.”
