Perfectly led by the pace leaders and guided by the “wavelight” (light technology at the edge of the track), Tsegay finished alone following having managed to remove from his wake the Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, herself very close to the old record (14:05.92).
Kipyegon, undefeated this season and world distance champion in Hungary, did not take part in the race following winning the 1,500m on Saturday.
At 26, Tsegay sets a second world record, while she holds the 1,500 m indoor record (3:53.09 in Liévin in 2021).
The Ethiopian triumphed in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Budapest last month but failed in the 5,000m final (13th). She was crowned world distance champion in 2022 on this same Hayward Field track, following winning Olympic bronze in Tokyo in 2021.
