Amath Faye won the bronze medal in the long jump yesterday Thursday on the occasion of the second day of the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius. On the occasion of this competition, other Senegalese represent the country of Teranga.
Thanks to Amath Faye, Senegal has just won its first medal at the African Athletics Championships. With 7m70 in the long jump final, the Senegalese arrived in 3rd place on the podium, behind the Batswana Thalosang Tshireletso (7m78) and the South African Cheswill Johnson (7m82). In this same event, another Senegalese by the name of Lys Mendy ranked 10th with 7m21.
Beyond athletics, other distinctions were also obtained by representatives of Senegal. Just remember that Cheikh Tidiane Diouf withdrew from the semi-finals yesterday, due to muscle discomfort that requires a two-week rest.
This 2nd day of the African Championships was marked by the victory of the Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala and the Gambian Gina Bass in the queen event: the 100m. African record holder for the distance, Omanyala has just won his first title in 09″93.
In the final, he beat his main rival, the South African Akani Sim bine, by 3 thousandths of a second. The other South African, Henricho Bruintjies, completed the podium with 10″01. Unsurprisingly, Gina Bass (11″06) was crowned ahead of Nigerian Aminatou Seyni (11″’09) and South African Horn Carina (11″14).
After his bronze medal in the long jump, the Senegalese Amath Faye will defend his chances in the triple jump this Friday. Fatou Diocou (hammer) will also be in the running. Senegal is represented at this 22nd edition of the African Championships by a contingent of 13 athletes.
