Athletes fall ill due to alleged contamination of the Seine River

Two Swiss athletes withdrew from the Olympic Games from Paris 2024, for allegedly presenting bodily infections.

One of them previously swam in the Seine River during the triathlon competition amid concerns about the quality of the river’s water.

Swiss Olympic authorities announced this weekend that triathlete Adrien Briffod, who competed in the Seine on Wednesday, had suffered a stomach infection. But they clarified that it was “impossible to say” whether it was related to swimming.

Health problems for athletes in Paris 2024

The Belgian Olympic Committee recently announced that it will withdraw its team from the mixed relay triathlon at the Olympic Games after athlete Claire Michel was hospitalized with an intestinal bacteria.

Michel has reportedly been ill for four days with the bacteria “echerichia coli,” which can cause stomach and intestinal problems. «The cause seems to be the contaminated Seine»reported the Nieuwsblad newspaper.

Paris 2024 organisers did not immediately comment on Michel’s case, but said in a statement that the mixed relay triathlon would go ahead as normal.

Last Wednesday, another Olympic athlete felt unwell shortly after finishing the men’s triathlon on the Seine. «I vomited 10 times»confessed Canadian Tyler Mislawchuk.
