It is not new that Atari has been rehearsing its triumphant return to the royalty of the video game world, having even recently acquired the copyrights of more than 100 games from the 80s and 90s. Even though the industry has changed a lot over the years, we cannot deny the impact and importance of Atari for everything we know today.
This week, the veteran brought exciting news by announcing the Atari 2600 Plus, a new console with support for classic and new games.
The Atari 2600 Plus is a faithful, modern recreation of the pioneering and iconic console that first appeared in 1980. The Atari 2600 Plus will be released worldwide in November 17, 2023 and is now available for pre-order at select retailers.
Launched with 10 of the most recognizable games in Atari history, including Adventure® and Missile Command®, the Atari 2600 Plus was created using modern technology to authentically replicate the original four-switch Atari 2600 Video Game System.
For those looking to relive gaming experiences from the 70s and 80s, the CX40 Plus Joystick Controller is included, recreated in the same size and layout as the original Atari 2600 controller.
Key features of the new console include:
BUILDING ON THE LEGACY: The new Atari 2600 Plus builds on the original machine with modern quality-of-life features like an included HDMI output, USB power and support for multiple screen resolutions, as well as a faithful replica of the original Joystick CX40 Plus.
TIMES NO TIME: The cartridge bay is compatible with hundreds of original Atari 2600 and 7800 games. The Atari 2600 Plus ships with a 10-in-1 game cartridge that includes iconic titles such as Adventure®, Combat®, Dodge ‘Em™, Haunted House®, Maze Craze™, Missile Command®, Realsports® Volleyball, Surround™, Video Pinball™ and Yars’ Revenge®
CLASSIC AESTHETICS OF THE 1980’S: The Atari 2600 Plus was created with love using modern technology, greatly improving it – from the movement of the joystick to the feel of the metal switches – while retaining authentic features like the wooden front panel.
The Atari 2600+ will launch with an MSRP of US$ 129,99 (~R$ 642). Pre-orders are currently only available in North America.
PLAION and Atari will also release the CX-30 Paddle Controller bundle, containing the controller along with a 4-in-1 multi-game cartridge for $39.99. A standalone CX-40 joystick will be available for $24.99. Additional launch titles, including cartridges for Berzerk Enhanced Edition and Mr. Run and Jump, will also be available for the Atari 2600 Plus for $29.99 at launch.
