RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — An Israeli airstrike killed five Palestinians in the occupied West Bank early Wednesday, according to Palestinian officials.

The Israeli army said it attacked a group of rebels in the northern town of Tubas early Wednesday.

The Palestinian health ministry in the West Bank confirmed the death toll but did not indicate whether the victims of the Israeli operation were rebels or civilians.

Israel has stepped up military incursions across the territory in recent weeks and insists it is working to disrupt rebel groups and prevent attacks. Palestinians believe the actions are aimed at cementing Israel’s seemingly endless military rule over the territory.

Israel captured the West Bank as well as east Jerusalem and Gaza in the 1967 Six-Day War, and Palestinians want the three territories to become part of their future state.

Violence has surged in the West Bank since Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, triggering the war in Gaza.
