BEIJING (AP) — A knife attack near a school in the Chinese capital on Monday injured five people, including three children, police said.

The attack occurred in the afternoon in Haidian District, northwest Beijing. No one died, police said in a statement. He added that a 50-year-old suspect surnamed Tang has been detained at the scene and is under investigation.

The location of the attack identified in the statement was near a well-known elementary school.

A video circulated on social media showed two schoolchildren lying on the ground. Another photo showed a man with a bloodied face being pinned to the ground.

There have been a number of knife attacks in China this year, many involving students.

Last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student died after being attacked with a knife near his school in the southern city of Shenzhen. In June, another attack occurred at a bus stop at a Japanese language school in Suzhou, injuring a woman and her son. A Chinese woman who tried to intervene was murdered.

In early October, a knife attack occurred in a supermarket in Shanghai, killing three people and injuring 15 others.

China strictly limits private ownership of guns, with knives and homemade explosives being the most common weapons.
