Atacama Trench: what the first scientists found to go down 8,000 meters under the sea

The Atacama Trench is 5,900 meters long and 8,069 meters deep. An unexplored place until now for the human being, until the expedition of which the Chilean scientists Osvaldo Ulloa and Rubén Escribano recently took part.

Both oceanographers from the Millennium Institute of Oceanography at the University of Concepción, in Chile, descended to the site with the expedition of the American explorer Víctor Bishopwho in 2019 became the first person to visit the five deepest points in the five oceans piloting a purpose-built submersible.

The objective of this expedition to the Atacama Trench is to explore the underwater floor, study the fauna that lives thousands of meters deep and try to understand this seismic zone that can be so damaging to the countries of South America.
