Among the respondents to this study, 67% admitted to having experienced financial problems in their lifetimeand 23% have faced these difficulties in the past year, especially those whose monthly income is less than €900 (38%). Young people aged 18 to 24 were not spared, with 36% of them affected over the past 12 months.
These financial problems are proving to be a major factor social and emotional isolation. Psychological repercussions
The psychological consequences are also significant. Nearly 77% of French people struggling with financial problems have suffered from intense stress, anxiety and nervousness, with 33% of these episodes occurring in the past year. THE sleep disorders affected 73% of themwomen (78%) being more affected than men (68%). Symptoms such as crying (58%), depressive episodes (44%), libido disorders (32%), and even suicidal thoughts (23%) have been reported. In total, 87% of people facing financial difficulties have experienced one or more of these disorders, including 44% during the previous year.
A male-female inequality
Women appear to be hit harder than men. Over the last 12 months, 25% of women have encountered financial difficulties compared to 21% of men. Psychological disorders linked to money are also more common among women (46% compared to 41%). Women also report higher sleep disturbances (78% compared to 68% among men) and more marked feeling of failure (47% compared to 41% among men). More than 8 in 10 women (81%) who have difficulty meeting their responsibilities have given up social activities, such as going to a restaurant or an event with loved ones, compared to 69% of men. In addition, 71% of the women concerned have given up going on vacation with loved ones for fear of not being able to afford it financially, compared to 62% of men.
