“At the change of the day.” Chinese wholesale market in Havana causes a stir

A Chinese wholesale market in Havana, China Import, located on Manglar and Oquendo, in Centro Habana, near the well-known Cuatro Caminos market in the Cuban capital, is causing a stir these days on social media. Why?

The Chinese warehouse store sparked the interest of Cuban entrepreneurs due to the wide variety of products it offers and its competitive prices, but also because they use the informal exchange rate offered daily by the El Toque media outlet to exchange money into national currency.

“The change of day ñoooo. I’m fed up with the Toque. The only thing you’ve seen is that in my posts today, I’ll let you know, don’t worry because tomorrow morning I’ll do a live from the place and investigate if the Chinese guy was touched by the toque, or the toque touched the Chinese guy,” wrote the Cuban influencer from Pura Cepa on Facebook.

Another responded that “it is inconceivable that they are guided by an informal exchange rate that is the one that is circulating in the country. It is nothing new, and the average person will never have access to it, they do not even have a minimum quality of life (…) the government is the one most responsible.”

“We went to a very good place, but you have to buy at least 6 products of the same type, imagine I was going for 2 showers, and I have to buy 6 for them to sell them to me,” said another user.

Cubans celebrated the reopening of this type of business in Havana, stressing that after a long time, Chinese businessmen returned to the capital with such a varied offering that “there is everything like in a pharmacy.”

He also mentioned that the products can be purchased in national currency (MN) at the exchange rate of the day, according to Toque. Although in the future payments by transfer in MN and MLC will be accepted, for now it is not available due to technical problems with the payment platforms in Cuba, said the aforementioned influencer.
