Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who arrived in New York yesterday to take part in the high-level week of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, began her visit to the United States with a series of meetings with representatives of the innovation sector. Yesterday, the Italian Prime Minister met with the CEOs of Alphabet (the multinational owner of Google), Sundar Pichai; of Motorola, Greg Brown; and of OpenAI, Sam Altman. In a note released yesterday, Palazzo Chigi specified that the discussions focused on the prospects for global technological and IT development, with particular reference to artificial intelligence and the opportunities and risks associated with technology. According to Italian sources, the meetings also represented an opportunity to discuss possible new investments in Italy by the three groups, which have reportedly expressed interest in investing in our country. Specifically, the companies are reportedly evaluating investments in the development of data centers, in Italian technology startups, and in deepening collaboration with Italian universities.

The Prime Minister’s visit to New York will continue today and tomorrow with appointments and meetings related to the UN General Assembly that will take place in the coming days at the Glass Palace. Today will begin with a speech at the Summit of the Future opened yesterday by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the President of the 79th session of the Assembly, Philemon Yang. According to Italian sources, the Prime Minister’s speech will focus on a series of key messages: from artificial intelligence to the government’s Mattei Plan for cooperation with the African continent, up to the topic of the reform of the United Nations Security Council. In the evening, Meloni will be awarded the 2024 Global Citizen Award from the US think tank Atlantic Council, which is presented every year on the sidelines of the UN Assembly to international personalities who have distinguished themselves at a global level.
