Jacqueline Madogo achieved a personal best to secure her spot in the 200m semi-finals on Monday at the Paris Olympics.
The Canadian sprinted across the track in 22.58 seconds, finishing first in her repechage heat. The day before, despite a time exceeding that of Quebec’s Audrey Leduc, she was unable to qualify among the top three in her very fast heat.
The two teammates will face off in the semi-final this afternoon, around 2:45 p.m.
Alysha Newman advances to the final
Canadian Alysha Newman has qualified for the pole vault final.
The 30-year-old from London, Ontario, cleared the 4.55-meter mark, the highest of the day, surpassing six competitors.
In Group B, her fellow Canadian Anicka Newell fell short, being stopped at 4.40m.
Newman holds the Canadian record at 4.83 meters and is participating in her third Olympic Games. She has cleared 4.75 meters or more in three of her last four competitions leading up to the Paris Games after recovering from an ankle injury sustained in March, just before the World Indoor Championships.
Wrestling: Morais seeks a second chance in repechage
Linda Morais was defeated in her round of 16 match by Nigerian Blessing Oborududu with a score of 8-2.
Morais scored the first two points with a takedown in the first period. However, the Nigerian controlled the second period.
If Oborududu wins her semi-final bout after defeating French wrestler Koumba Larroque in the quarter-finals, Morais could have a second chance to compete in the repechage tomorrow.
Morais is a world championship gold medalist in the 59kg category and qualified for her first Olympics by earning bronze in Istanbul in May in a new category.
