The owner of the hotel that collapsed in the Argentine city of Villa Gesell, María Rosa Stefanic, 52, was found dead in the rubble, official sources confirmed this Thursday.

The owner of the ten-story Dubrovnik Aparthotel, which collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday, is the second fatality found so far. The first was the retiree Federico Ciocchini, 84 years old, whose partner, Josefa Bonazza, is in critical condition.

“I can confirm that it is Rosa, we know it from the family’s confirmation through a tattoo that she had on her right arm,” said the Minister of Security of the province of Buenos Aires, Javier Alonso, in statements to the press at the scene.

Rescue teams continue to search for people in the rubble and, although the exact number of missing people is not known, it is presumed that there could be around seven.

More than 50 hours of uninterrupted work

After 56 hours of uninterrupted work, Alonso reported that to rescue the hotel owner, specialized teams dug a tunnel and that, when removing the body, they detected a danger of collapse in the structure.

“We know that there are more people there, but we have to have security to be able to move forward,” added the head of Buenos Aires Security.

About 300 people from the emergency services continue with search and rescue tasks, including rescue firefighters, police and K9 dog brigades.

Drones and cranes are also being used to remove the concrete.

Despite having machinery to remove material, part of the work is done by hand for fear that the general movement of the debris and debris could cause more damage to the trapped people.

Investigation details

According to the minister, 150 square meters of concrete were removed in three days and they are evaluating the possibilities of “resuming the tunnel strategy” to rescue more people.

Alonso highlighted that the investigation is progressing in a “painstaking” manner, with hearings of the “different actors involved,” to try to establish responsibilities among the “different people who went through the work.”

Prosecutor Verónica Zamboni, in charge of the investigation, took statements on Wednesday from four construction workers detained after the collapse.

The workers were working in the back of the aparthotel, in a work that, according to the municipality, was not authorized.

“The works were being carried out clandestinely, without complying with municipal regulations, nor did they have the corresponding municipal authorization. The work had been paralyzed by the municipality in August of this year,” indicated the Municipality of Gesell in a statement.
