At least three people were killed and eleven injured Friday night in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train in central Croatia. The accident occurred at 9:30 p.m. near the town of Novska, located regarding 100 kilometers southeast of Zagreb, said the Croatian Interior Ministry.

“According to the information currently available, the eleven injured people have been hospitalized,” Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Saturday. None of the injured, including people of foreign nationality, suffered from life-threatening injuries, he said.

A Red Cross official told state-run HINA news agency that a total of eight foreigners were among the injured and most likely they were illegal migrants. A hospital in Nova Gradiska, near the scene of the tragedy, said it had received an Iranian family of five members.

Convoy stopped

The reason for this collision remains unknown at this time. The accident happened when a passenger train traveling on a local line collided with a stationary freight train, according to Andrej Plenkovic.
