The Minister of Security of Buenos Aires (Argentina), Javier Alonso, confirmed the death of a man after the collapse of the Apart Hotel Dubrovnik, a 10-story building located in the city of Villa Gesell. The incident occurred during the morning of Tuesday, October 29.

According to the newspaper The Nation from Argentina, the victim lived in a building that was located next to the hotel. In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office reported that among the rubble there is a person whom rescuers are assisting with oxygen.

Authorities revealed that the case is being investigated as a “culpable havoc.” In addition to three building workers, the Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the alleged responsibility of two architects who were in charge of the work being carried out at the hotel.

“Approximately 80% of the building collapsed. The rescuers had contact with a woman who says she is with another trapped woman and they are working to rescue them. There is a lot of debris, but we have identified the place,” Piriz said in an interview with The Nation.

He stressed that due to the nature of the work they will need more firefighters during the day for rescue efforts.

Witnesses to the collapse told local media that before the incident occurred they felt “a vibration” and when they looked out the windows of their homes they saw the structure fall.

Support from authorities in other cities

Officials from surrounding cities, such as Madariaga, Pinamar and the Atlantic Coast, also joined the rescue operation. In that sense, the Minister of Security of the Province of Buenos Aires highlighted that there are 180 emergency system specialists working on site.
