**Interview with Dr. Rania Al-Masri, Middle East Affairs Expert**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Al-Masri. We’ve just received tragic news from Lebanon, where the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported at least 54 deaths over the last 24 hours due to ongoing conflicts. What are your immediate thoughts on this latest escalation?
**Dr. Al-Masri:** Thank you for having me. It is indeed heartbreaking to see such loss of life. The situation in Lebanon has been dire for some time now, and these latest figures only underscore the desperation and turmoil that civilians are facing daily. The reported casualties, particularly among women and children, highlight the human cost of this conflict, which is spiraling out of control.
**Editor:** The report indicates that a majority of the recent deaths occurred in Mount Lebanon, particularly in the town of Alamat. Can you provide some context about this area and why it is significant in the current conflict?
**Dr. Al-Masri:** Mount Lebanon has historically been a strategic location due to its proximity to both urban centers and the borders. It’s significant not just politically, but also culturally, as it has a diverse population. The attacks there reflect the broader regional tensions and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Unfortunately, areas like Alamat are often caught in the crossfire, leading to tragic consequences for innocent civilians.
**Editor:** Over the past year, the death toll in Lebanon has tragically risen to 3,243, including a substantial number of children and women. What does this tell us about the impact of the conflict on vulnerable populations?
**Dr. Al-Masri:** It tells us that the conflict is disproportionately affecting those who are least able to protect themselves. The high numbers of children and women among the casualties indicate a grave humanitarian crisis. This should serve as a wake-up call to the international community to take more decisive action to alleviate the suffering of civilians. Furthermore, it raises pressing questions about accountability and the need for lasting solutions to prevent further loss of life.
**Editor:** In light of these developments, what steps do you think should be taken to address the situation in Lebanon and promote peace?
**Dr. Al-Masri:** Immediate humanitarian assistance is critical. Aid organizations must have unrestricted access to the affected regions to provide relief. Long-term, we need a renewed dialogue involving all stakeholders, including those from Lebanon, Israel, and international mediators, to work toward a sustainable peace agreement. The role of grassroots movements in Lebanon cannot be overlooked, as they are instrumental in fostering resilience and rebuilding communities in the face of ongoing adversity.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Al-Masri, for your insights on this devastating situation. We hope for a swift resolution and peace in the region.
**Dr. Al-Masri:** Thank you for highlighting these important issues. Let’s hope for a brighter future for Lebanon.
