At least 30 people were killed in an explosion at a gas station in the Russian republic of Dagestan, officials said. Another 75 people were injured in the city of Makhachkala, the state news agency TASS reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The rubble was still being cleared and the search for victims continued. The explosion happened on Monday evening.
Investigations into possible violations of safety regulations had been initiated, it said. Three children were among the fatalities, the Interfax news agency had previously reported, citing local emergency doctors.
The fire broke out on Monday evening in a car repair shop near a highway in the Dagestan capital Makhachkala and triggered explosions that spread to a nearby gas station, the authorities said.
Pictures online showed a one-story building on fire. “It looks like wartime here,” an eyewitness told Archyde.com TV. It took firefighters more than three and a half hours to extinguish the fire, which had spread over an area of 600 square meters, TASS reported, citing the Russian emergency services.
Also on Monday evening there was an explosion at an oil field in central Russia. According to official information, two people were killed. Five other people were injured, the Interfax agency reported on Monday evening, citing the government of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, which lies east of the Ural Mountains. A fire broke out in around a hundred square meters on the Talinskoye oil field, it said. It was initially unclear how the explosion happened.
