The landfill, created in 1996, receives almost all of Kampala’s garbage. A lot of people live and make a living there looking in the garbage for something that can be sold. Now the authorities have announced that a protection zone will be created around the dump. More than 1,000 people were evacuated from their accommodation in the narrow periphery of the dump after the landslide.

President Yoweri Museveni ordered special police forces to join the investigation and asked “who is it that allowed people to live near such a potentially toxic and dangerous site”.
