At least 22 people died in a traffic accident in Bolivia

***A bus and a truck collided on a highway in the west of the Andean nation. Some 16 people were reported injured.

The death toll from a road crash between a bus and a truck in western Bolivia on Saturday rose to 22 following police finished rescue efforts.

The accident occurred shortly before the town of Tambo Quemado near the border with Chile, regarding 150 kilometers southwest of La Paz. The bus was heading to the Chilean city of Arica and the truck was returning to Bolivia, according to the police report.

Fourteen of the dead have been identified and another eight whose identities are unknown, La Paz police commander Colonel Edgar Cortez told television station Red Uno. Another 16 people were injured and taken to medical centers in the capital, he said.

Police initially reported 10 dead and 15 injured, but rescue efforts continued into Saturday followingnoon. Some of the victims were “trapped between the metal of the bus,” Cortez said.

Most of the dead were on board the bus. The drivers of both vehicles were killed, Cortez said. The truck apparently crossed into the opposite lane while trying to overtake another vehicle and collided with the bus, he said.
