YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — At least 20 people were killed and nearly 300 injured following an explosion at a gas station in Nagorno-Karabakh, separatist authorities in the region, which has returned to Azerbaijan’s control following decades under control, said Tuesday. ethnic Armenian separatists.

13 bodies were found at the scene and another seven people died from their injuries following the explosion at the gas station on the outskirts of the regional capital, Stepanakert, according to the separatist region’s health department.

Dozens of the 290 hospitalized were in serious condition, the department added.

The explosion occurred as thousands of residents of Nagorno-Karabakh left the region for Armenia following a rapid Azerbaijani military operation last week to recapture the entire region following three decades of separatist control.
