At least 188 people have died in floods since March 2024-05-06 19:44:38

Since the start of the rainy season, heavy rainfall, intensified by the El Niño climate phenomenon, has caused flooding, destroying roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

“The country unfortunately recorded the death of 188 people due to adverse weather conditions,” the ministry said in a statement. The government’s previous tally put the death toll at at least 179.

Also, 125 people were injured and 90 others are missing, while 165,000 people have been forced to leave their homes, according to the announcement.

In the deadliest episode of these storms, dozens of people were killed overnight Sunday into Monday when a dam broke in the central part of the country due to the accumulation of rainwater.

According to the interior ministry, 52 bodies have been found and 51 people are still missing near Mai Mahiu in the Rift Valley, regarding 60 km from the capital Nairobi.

In addition, around 100 tourists were stranded yesterday due to a river overflowing in the Maasai Mara National Park following heavy rains. According to the tourism ministry, rescue services managed to evacuate 90 people from the park, where 19 guesthouses were flooded.

Several other countries in eastern Africa are facing the devastating effects of rainy seasons that have been intensified by the El Niño phenomenon. In Tanzania, at least 155 people have died in floods or landslides.
