(CNN Spanish) –– A traffic accident on the highway between Oaxaca and Cuacnopalan, in Mexico, this Sunday left at least 17 migrants dead, according to information provided by Puebla authorities on Monday.
According to the Secretary of the Interior of Puebla, Julio Huerta, 45 people were traveling in a vehicle, of which 15 died at the time of the accident, 2 died in the hospital and another 15 were transferred to a care center. Of the injured and wounded, 5 remain in delicate condition, the official added.
The secretary pointed out that the victims were of “foreign origin… apparently without documents” and from “Colombia, Venezuela and Central America.”
For its part, the Colombian Foreign Ministry reported in a statement that Mexican authorities informed them that among the victims is “a 56-year-old man of Colombian nationality, who died in the accident and who was already recognized by his son.”
It also indicated that “another 30-year-old Colombian citizen was identified, who is in good health and is available to the immigration authorities of Oaxaca.” In addition, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that three injured citizens of that country are reported to be in the General Hospital of Tehuacán: “two men, 23 and 37 years old, and a 36-year-old woman, with a delicate but stable diagnosis.”
