Attacks on health personnel, health facilities and ambulances in Sudan have left at least three dead and two injured, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO notes that reports of military strikes once morest health facilities, hijacking of ambulances while carrying patients and paramedics, looting of health facilities and military forces occupying health facilities are deeply concerning.

“Attacks on health care are a flagrant violation of international law and the right to health. They have to stop now. Parties to the conflict must ensure safe access for patients, health personnel and ambulances to hospitals at all times. Patients need access to health services not only for treatment of injuries, but also for other basic and life-saving services”, he notes in a statement.

At least 16 hospitals (including nine in Khartoum) are reportedly out of action due to attacks, and 16 hospitals in Khartoum and other states, including Darfur states, are nearly inoperable due to staff fatigue and lack of supplies.

Hospitals in Khartoum receiving wounded are reporting shortages of blood, transfusion equipment, intravenous fluids, medical supplies and other life-saving items. Shortages of water, electricity, fuel and food for patients are also reported.

“As challenges related to access to health care increase and health personnel face limited resources to treat patients, the safety and sanctity of health care must always be protected, especially in conflict situations when access to life-saving services is still more vital”, adds the WHO.

Fighting in Sudan continues unabated. The number of people who have lost their lives exceeds 270. The UN said 1,800 were injured, but there are certainly many more, as access to the war zones is difficult or impossible for patients and doctors.

In Darfur, a stronghold of General Daglo and his thousands of men, who committed unspeakable atrocities in the 2003 war in the state, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that in three days it brought in 183 wounded, “among them many children”, in her last hospital that continues to operate.
