Accordingly, two people were injured in the attack on a workshop in the port city of Guayaquil on Saturday evening (local time). The police suspected that the act was related to drug trafficking, as reported by the Ecuadorian newspaper “El Universo”.
At least nine people were killed in an armed attack in northern Ecuador more than two weeks ago. In response to a wave of crime, the Ecuadorian government relaxed gun laws in early April and imposed a curfew around Guayaquil. Violence in Ecuador has recently increased significantly. The number of homicides rose from 2,115 to 4,603 last year. The murder rate of 25 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants was the highest in the history of the South American country.
The government blames drug dealers in particular for the wave of violence. Cocaine is manufactured in Colombia, Bolivia and Peru and then smuggled mainly to the USA and Europe. Drug smuggling fuels brutal violence and widespread corruption on transit routes.
