  • The Queen (96) has “cancelled her traditional reception at the gates of her Scottish castle, Balmoral”, as reported by the “Mirror”.

  • Instead, there will be a “small, private event”.

  • According to the British newspaper, experts see this as a sign of an “uncertain future”.

How bad is Queen Elizabeth really? This question arises with the latest news from the British royal family. After the 96-year-old in recent months due to health problems and persistent mobility problems already had to cut back and cancel some public appointments, there is now another drastic change: the big reception, which takes place annually in honor of the Queen at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, has been cancelled.

Instead, the «Mirror» according to a «small, private event» held. It is the first time in decades – barring the pandemic year of 2020 – that the monarch is not greeted with a grand ceremony at the gates of the castle in the Highlands to herald the start of her summer vacation. Every year she travels to Aberdeenshire in June, but initially lives in the nearby Craigowan Lodge. The reason: The royal residence is open to the public as an attraction until the beginning of August.

“Big disappointment”

After their move, this is traditionally the case pompous welcoming committee instead of. The Queen, who acts as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, normally inspects the Honor Guard of the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, among others. This will also be the case this year, but without the presence of photographers, camera teams and reporters.

It is a “severe disappointment” that the event cannot be held in its traditional form, a palace source told the British newspaper. And further: “The big reception in Balmoral is usually firmly anchored in the Queen’s calendar. Her Majesty really enjoys greeting the locals, some of whom come specially to see her.”

Private ceremony is “in line with the monarch’s schedule”

Royal experts even interpret the alternative plan to the “Mirror” as a “sign of an uncertain future”. Buckingham Palace itself qualified the decision Monday night, stating that the private ceremony is “consistent with adjusting Her Majesty’s schedule for her comfort.”

Balmoral Castle is a personal property of the Queen and is not owned by the Crown. It is therefore also used for recreation and is not considered an official residence. From July to October, the monarch usually relaxes in the Highlands. However, she will briefly interrupt her vacation for an upcoming meeting: After the resignation of Boris Johnson (58), the Queen will receive the new Prime Minister of Great Britain in the palace as soon as he takes office.
