I recently read a report regarding the freedom of the press in the Arab world and the Gulf states, I do not know the reliability of its information. It is known that the validity of this freedom in the whole world is not good, and this is what makes it impossible to talk regarding absolute freedom in any media, as there are many considerations and interventions. Which undermine this freedom, such as local laws and the security situation in the world and the region, as well as relations and interests, the influence of pressure groups, and other things that play a role in the matter, and journalists and media professionals have always paid their lives for their pursuit of news, scoops and secrets that are not allowed to be published, this is an issue that will remain in tension And a constant attraction and debate as long as there are media and media professionals and a passion for the truth!
Two days ago, I was looking for the history of one of the international novels that dealt directly and explicitly with the issue of suppressing people’s freedom to read and own books! It is the novel “Fahrenheit 451” by the American novelist Ray Bradbury, telling the story of a repressive regime in which firefighters are tasked with burning books at 451 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the degree in which paper burns itself!
The firefighter Montague, following meeting his neighbor, the reader Clarisse, and accepting to read a beautiful novel that she recommended to him, falls in love with the ancient human heritage that he would not have known regarding without her.
The novel was published in 1953 AD, and following 70 years, United States libraries decide to ban this novel from readers. Due to the vulgarity of its subjects, it was also prevented from teaching it to students due to a complaint filed by a number of parents who found moral and religious differences in it, as stated in a report on the American Marshall Libraries website!
The novel was a response from the writer to the intellectual terrorism practiced by politician Joseph McCarthy on writers and intellectuals in America who are suspected of sympathizing with the Soviet Union during the Cold War period. The irony is that although the novel revolves around ban and censorship, it was censored and banned on December 13, 2021. In a country that is considered the first in freedoms!!
