What were you doing at 15? Gabriel Rochet, meanwhile, from a young age, designed his own telephone. He describes himself as passionate regarding electronics and programming. THE Paxo Phone is a mobile phone with components that cost him 30 euros. Even better, the young inventor has published the plans, the software code and even the 3D printing models so that he can create one at home.

Obviously, this is not an Android smartphone with camera and super fast processor. It does not even allow access to social networks or WhatsApp-type messaging, an absence put forward as an advantage, freeing the user from his dependence on Web giants. The Paxo phone works with its own paxos_8 operating system reduced to the essential functions: calls, messages, contacts, calculator, clock (with alarms and stopwatch), calculator and GPS. It even offers two games: the famous Snake (which was notably present on Nokia phones from 1998) and the 2048.

An open source assembly that requires few tools

This is the fourth version of the Paxo phone, this one being much smaller than the previous ones. The heart of the device is an ESP32 microcontroller with two 240 MHz cores. It uses a SIM800L to connect to the 2G network. However, it should be noted that operators will stop 2G and 3G networks from 2025. A switch to 4G may increase the price and complexity of the phone. The Paxo Phone sports a 320 x 480 pixel touchscreen, and uses a microSD card for storage.

All assembly instructions are written on site, and require an oven or heat gun, and a soldering iron. The case can be 3D printed or ordered online. The inventor also plans to publish a YouTube video detailing the assembly.

The budding young engineer is also planning to post details of other DIY projects as well: a Peltier lamp, a battery tester, an enclosure, an electric motor, a multi-environment sensor, and a optical music transmitter.
