“Asylum Seekers Occupy Building in Brussels Demanding Solutions – Latest Updates”

Masks of Alexander De Croo (Open-VLD) but especially of Nicole De Moor (CD&V) on their faces, around fifty asylum seekers took possession of the building next to the headquarters of the CD&V, the party of the Secretary of State to Asylum and Migration. The objective: to make the latter react to the “3,000 asylum seekers sleeping outside (et) are seeing their health deteriorate day by day. We need structural solutions here and now”.

In reality, the occupation started a few days ago, off the radar. This rainy Sunday, the police were present, rue de la Loi, to secure the entrance to the building before retracting following a few minutes and slight tensions. “We demand that solutions be found so that these people are taken care of by Fedasil”, advances Clara Delacroix, who is part of the support collective, present with around fifty demonstrators this Sunday.

Nicole De Moor on the migration crisis: “It’s -5°C, if Mrs. Moureaux insists on closing a reception center, it’s a shame”

Regarding the building, it is in fact the former headquarters of the Church of Scientology, which belongs to the real estate developer Atenor. There is water and electricity, occupier supports will soon announce how citizens can help the occupiers. Major work is planned on the walls, but the permit has not yet been granted, which makes Yan Verhoeven, a member of the militant collective, say that asylum seekers will still be able to occupy this building for a long time, instead to be on the street. Unless an eviction is planned by the City of Brussels shortly. Contacted, the latter has not yet responded to our requests. Belga announces that the police do not intend to dislodge the occupants.

This occupation is presented as the second episode of the occupation of the federal crisis center, rue des Palais in Schaerbeek, in February. An occupation that ended (partially) in pain, with the return to the street of some of the asylum seekers. They had then camped opposite the Petit Château, on the quays of the Brussels canal.

A night with the forgotten of the Palais des Droits: “one day, we will testify in front of a crowd of the wonders of solidarity of the Belgians”
