For months, the municipality of Kindberg has been fighting once morest the federal government’s plans to convert the former state care center into asylum accommodation for up to 250 refugees in need of medical care from January – more on this in Municipality of Kindberg once morest asylum home (23.9.2022).
Although there were no construction workers to be seen on St. Mary’s Day, the conversion and renovation work in the former state nursing home has begun – this is also confirmed by Kindberg Mayor Christian Sander (SPÖ): “Of course we notice that there is construction work, work is being done inside. We are still once morest it becoming a mass quarter, it can neither be integrated nor solved for the population here.”
Still local resistance
In the village, resistance to the refugee accommodation is still great, even if protests, demos and lists of signatures have not been fruitful so far – more on that in Demonstration once morest planned asylum accommodation in Kindberg (4.11.2022). “You notice the fears once more and once more – the immediate neighbors in particular are the most afraid. You’re worried regarding the uncertainty,” Sander said.
Great concern among the Kindbergers
In Kindberg in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district, there is still resistance to the planned refugee quarters in the former state nursing home. The first refugees are expected to move in there as early as January. The concerns among the Kindbergern are great.
The mayor of Kindberg is planning a building law check if the quarter is opened, “whether everything is in order – water quality, air quality and so on. If something doesn’t fit, you can’t open it, that’s building law throughout Austria,” says Sander.
Federal care agency confirms work
The Federal Care Agency confirms the progress of the renovation work: They want to start occupying the quarter with a maximum of 250 refugees at the beginning of January – mainly families, children and people in need of care. In Kindberg, however, people remain sceptical.
