In the first half of 2024, 499,470 asylum applications were submitted, which is only a decrease of two percent compared to the same period last year, reports “Welt am Sonntag”, citing previously unpublished figures from the European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA).
In Austria, however, there were 41 percent fewer applications. Most applicants in this country came from Syria (51 percent) and Afghanistan (15 percent). In third place were people from Turkey (5.5 percent).
Germany recorded a decline of 20 percent to 115,682 applicants. Nevertheless, the Federal Republic remains the leader in the EU. According to EUAA statistics, 50 percent of Syrians and 48 percent of Afghans who came to Europe submitted an application in Germany.
Despite the recently adopted EU migration agreements with Tunisia and Egypt, Spain recorded 87,700 asylum applications in the first six months of the current year, according to the EUAA, which represents an increase of one percent compared to the same period last year.
In Italy there were 81,108 applications (plus 32 percent), in France 77,474 (minus six percent) and Greece 29,776 (plus 77 percent). The fewest applications
