Asylum applications are also falling in May

The number of asylum applications in Austria continued to fall in May. According to new figures from the Interior Ministry, 4,354 applications were made, up from 6,030 in May 2022. In a long-term comparison, this is of course still a very high value. In May 2019 – i.e. before the corona pandemic – there were only 1,027 applications. At the top are now more or less traditionally Syrians and Afghans.

So far in 2023, a total of 17,988 asylum applications have been made, which is a decrease of around 20 percent compared to the first five months of the previous year. The Ministry of the Interior attributes this development to four factors – on the one hand to consistent border point and border area controls in Austria, on the other hand to combating people smuggling on routes abroad, for example by Austrian police officers in Serbia and Montenegro, and also to international cooperation, for example the end of visas -freedom for Indians and Tunisians in Serbia, and finally to faster procedures in this country.

By the end of April, 3,624 negative decisions had been made in the expedited and expedited procedures. In addition, by the end of May around 16,989 people had evaded the procedure, i.e. usually left Austria for the actual target countries. Asylum was granted in 6,359 cases by the end of May. 11,930 asylum decisions were negative. Basic services must continue to be used heavily, which at the beginning of the month included 34,235 asylum seekers, persons entitled to asylum and protection and 50,305 people displaced by war from Ukraine.
