ASUS has unveiled the GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 16GB and RTX 4080 12GB graphics cards in their proprietary ROG Strix and TUF Gaming designs. The new products received a refreshed design of cooling systems, which have become much larger and more efficient than their predecessors. However, this is not surprising, since the manufacturer claims power consumption of up to 500 W for new cards.
The GeForce RTX 4090 ROG Strix model received a huge cooling system with a thickness of 3.5 expansion slots. It features a die-cast metal frame for durability, as well as a metal rear reinforcement plate to keep the card from flexing under its weight. The length of the accelerator is an impressive 357 mm. The company does not report on the mass of new items.
The manufacturer completely redesigned the cooling system. It uses a new heatsink and a new evaporation chamber with a 30% larger heat dissipation area. For even higher heat transfer efficiency, four heat pipes with a diameter of 8 mm and three with a diameter of 6 mm are literally recessed into the evaporation chamber itself, in which special channels are made using a milling machine.
The GeForce RTX 4090 ROG Strix cooling system received larger fans with seven blades, equipped with a barrier ring. The “propellers” provide 23.8% more efficient airflow and 19.3% higher static pressure than previous generation fans on the ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 model. not much changed from the previous generation. It is also noted that the “turntables” have the function of a complete stop in the absence of load.
The card uses a 12+4-phase power subsystem with 70A phases. Since each phase has two power stages, the total number is 24+4.
In the performance of TUF Gaming, the GeForce RTX 4090 model has a thickness of 3.65 expansion slots. The length of the video card is 348 mm. It also features a metal back plate and frame for durability.
This version’s cooling system features new fans with 20% more airflow, a new heatsink and evaporator chamber with 35% more contact area, and eight heat pipes (five 8mm and three 6mm). The power supply subsystem of the novelty is built according to the 10 + 4 scheme with two power stages for each phase.
ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards in Strix and TUF Gaming versions are equipped with dual BIOS systems with quiet and performance modes. The necessary additional power for the accelerators is supplied using a new 12 + 4-pin PCIe 5.0 connector.
The thickness of the “simpler” model ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4080 16GB is 3.5 expansion slots, and the length of the video card is 357 mm. At the same time, the thickness of the TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 accelerator is 3.65 expansion slots, but the card is 9 mm shorter.
The ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4080 12GB model has a thickness of 3.15 expansion slots and a length of 336mm. In the TUF Gaming version, the thickness of this accelerator is 3.25 expansion slots, and the length is 305 mm. All presented versions of the GeForce RTX 4080 from ASUS, like the older GeForce RTX 4090, received dual BIOS systems and updated cooling systems.
Curiously, for their new products, ASUS recommends power supplies of the new Thor and Loki series with a power of 1000 W or more.
