ASUS ROG Ally users at risk: The mysterious SD card issues that have gamers shivering

2023-07-16 07:45:18

It’s a fact, more and more user reports of problem with SD cards on handheld game console ASUS ROG Ally. Indeed, the SD card reader would be defective on certain devices and under certain circumstances.

SD card issues on ASUS ROG Ally consoles: are you affected?

This issue has been confirmed by the senior marketing manager ASUS. Concretely, following a thermal stress (to understand by this a too high temperature over a period of time), which can then present malfunctions.

Remember that the SD reader is located near the VRMs of the ROG Ally. ASUS has placed a heatsink just above the drive, though. Technically SD cards can go up to a temperature of 85°C, but the console’s AMD Ryzen processor does not necessarily like such a high value. All this to say that in the small form factor that this portable game console represents, temperatures can quickly rise and the console can struggle to cool its components.

Here is the statement from WHISTON Gordon, ASUS:

Goodnight all. HQ released a new statement regarding their work on Ally’s SD card reader:

We would like to thank the community for the passionate response we received for the ROG Ally. Your support has been both immense and invaluable, so we’ve been working hard to improve a number of things. After confirmation from internal testing, under certain thermal stress conditions, the SD card reader may malfunction.

To mitigate the issue, we will be releasing an update that will further refine the default and minimum fan speeds on the device to improve reliability while controlling fan noise, as we know this is of concern to many. YOU.

If you are currently experiencing issues with your SD card reader, please contact [email protected] (US) or contact customer service in your region to RMA your device, which we will inspect for any issues and repair.

ROG Ally consoles are equipped with a convenient feature that allows users to easily modify the M.2 2230 SSD to expand their storage space. Data can be transferred via network or USB drives, but the SD card option gives gamers additional flexibility in transferring large volumes of data while maintaining portability. Unfortunately, some users have reported issues with the SD card being difficult to extract following long gaming sessions, or even complete card crashes.

Currently, there is no definite solution to solve this problem without compromising the storage expansion capability of the handheld game console. Several users seem to be affected by this issue and ASUS. The community and ASUS are working together to find a permanent solution. In an official statement, the company suggests that changing the fan profile might play a vital role in solving or, at least, limiting this problem.
