Astronomy. Planets, stars… These phenomena to observe this summer in the sky of Côte-d’Or

Check the dates: some astronomical phenomena can be seen this summer from the Côte-d’Or. However, these will be quite limited compared to other years. As Jérémy Balledant of the Astronomical Society of Burgundy (SAB) explains, we can essentially expect “reconciliations”, that is to say planets or stars which, from Earth, appear closer than as usual.

July 12: Jupiter

Observations can begin on Wednesday July 12, in the second part of the night. On the eastern horizon, the Moon will be very close to the planet Jupiter. The latter is easy to observe: “It shines a lot because it is brighter than the stars”, notes Jérémy Balledant.

July 25

That night, Mercury could be visible provided you follow certain rules. This planet being the first of the solar system starting from the Sun, it is often drowned in its halo. Very distant, it rarely rises high in our earthly skies. To have a chance to see it, it will therefore be necessary to have a clear sky with a very clear horizon.

July 28

Friday, July 28, in the middle of the night on the southern horizon, the Moon will this time seem very close to Antares, a star in the constellation of Scorpio. However, they are very far away in the galaxy: the Moon being located about 380,000 km from the Earth, and Antares about… 550 light years away!

August 3 and 8

On the horizon is August 3, a rapprochement between the Moon and Saturn – a planet famous for its rings – can be observed from the Côte-d’Or. A few days later, on August 8, still on the eastern horizon, the Moon will this time seem very close to Jupiter.

The Astronomical Society will offer several meetings during the summer. The full program can be found at his social networks.
