According to ASMA, the three surviving sailors wanted to reach the city of Cairns from the Vanuatu archipelago, located more than 2,000 km away. They had set sail on August 28.

Early Wednesday morning, around 1:30 a.m., they activated an emergency beacon.

Footage taken from a helicopter showed the massive Dugong Ace freighter approaching the catamaran which was floating in calm seas.

Safe and sound, the survivors should be dropped off in Brisbane on Thursday morning.

Australian authorities have released the names of the three sailors in charge. The Frenchman has been identified as Vincent Thomas Garate and his fellow Siberians Evgeny Kovalevsky and Stanislav Beryozkin

The Coral Sea is teeming with gray reef sharks and other species, such as tuna and marlin.
