Lance Stroll finished outside the top 10 at the Miami Grand Prix, capping off a weekend that fell short of expectations for the Aston Martin driver.
In an event where there were no retirements and where his teammate Fernando Alonso confirmed the second force status of the set ofAston Martin on the Miami track, the 12th final place of Lance Stroll on the other AMR23 hurts. The Canadian is the only driver among the five best teams of the weekend not to have managed to rank in the top 10, thus giving his chance to Kevin Magnussen driving the Haas.
Stroll’s fate was partly sealed the day before, during qualifying where he was eliminated in Q1 due to poor tire management. “It was just a tough race, with a DRS train all the way. And yes, the damage was done yesterday”he admitted.
“There was no degradation and yes, it was difficult to overtake. When there is no degradation and you can’t really overtake, it’s always difficult when you start at the back. “ Later he added: “At the start, I knew that unless I had a safety car or something at the end of the first stint, it would be difficult to get anything out of it.
Stroll was heard complaining about a lack of information on the radio: “I felt like I was a bit stuck in traffic and not much going on in the race. So yeah, I just wanted to know what was going on, and maybe strategize alternative. I will talk about it [à l’équipe].”
And precisely, did the team, according to him, learn from the error of Saturday in qualifying? “I think it’s part of racing. Sometimes you’re right, sometimes you’re wrong. If we had gone through, we would have had three trains for Q2, or potentially Q3, and that could have benefited us. With looking back it’s always easy to see what we could have done differently but definitely going through Q1 and having easy qualifying, putting us in a better position, would have made the day much better.”
On a lighter note, the Canadian was asked about Alonso’s radio message referring to one of his overtakes after seeing it on the giant screen. “I learned that, I guess he was having a quiet race up front. I don’t know what was going on there. I didn’t have time to watch TV! [Son podium] is a good thing for the team. But I’m quite unhappy with my weekend. I didn’t score any points, I expected more.”
Au drivers classificationStroll, whose preparation was truncated by his fall on the bike and the multiple injuries that followed, has only a third of the points of his teammate Fernando Alonso, who signed his fourth consecutive top 4 in Miami.
