A Aston Martin it’s at Porsche today released previews of the system that will be in their first vehicles to be launched (in 2024) with the novo CarPlayannounced in the WWDC22. The two automakers, it is worth remembering, are among the 14 that will launch cars with the new feature this year.
The new CarPlay is an even more immersive system, which combines existing resources with car functions, such as adjusting air conditioning, radio, speedometer and the like, occupying the entire vehicle dashboard.
According to what was demonstrated by companies and reported by Car and Driver, the interesting thing is that, despite the system having Apple interface elements, companies were given a margin for customization. Therefore, as highlighted by Alan Dye (Apple’s vice president of human interface design), each manufacturer will be able to insert its visual identity into elements of the interface displayed on the panels, such as the speedometer.
As we can see, this was the case for Aston Martin and Porsche. Even though it is the same system, you can notice how the speedometer area and other information related to navigation were designed favoring colors and elements that have more to do with the visual identity of each brand. The Aston Martin system, for example, displays the phrase “Handmade in Great Britain”.
Just as happened with the Nike and with the Hermes With its Apple Watch dials, Apple offered several interface customization tools for manufacturers to insert their elements into the new CarPlay. The idea, therefore, was that the integration between the company’s system and that of the car would occur both at the level of screens on the dashboard and in the software itself.
There is also some degree of customization for users, who will be able to choose which widgets will be displayed on their screens. Although data regarding the car is shown alongside iPhone apps, the information is not stored on the smartphone.
As there are several screens with CarPlay — and not just one dedicated to the multimedia system, as in most current vehicles — more information can also be displayed in an integrated way. On the speedometer, for example, the media currently playing can be shown, as well as app interfaces such as Maps and Phone on other screens, along with the app grid on the main display.
Aston Martin’s head of brand and commercial director, Marco Mattiaccihighlighted that the main reasons for choosing to collaborate with Apple were the search for excellence and performance:
The integration of state-of-the-art technology combined with an intuitive and personalized interface is fundamental to creating the best Aston Martin experience for consumers.
The executive also stated that he is excited to share more details regarding the new CarPlay in the brand’s vehicles and that the companies are working to have them launched in 2024. The new technology is compatible with the latest version of the company’s own system, which will also be launched with upcoming cars, such as the DB12 model.
Porsche’s vice president of styling, Michael Wall, in turn, recalled the importance of digital resources to offer a good driving experience, in line with the company’s history. He also highlighted a new company app for the current CarPlay that allows you to control car functions. The manufacturer, however, did not reveal when exactly vehicles with the new system will be launched, limiting itself to saying that this will occur “in the future”.
In addition to the announcement providing more details regarding the new CarPlay, the disclosure was also a way for Apple to somehow fulfill its promise to reveal more information regarding the new system by the end of 2023. Next year, more manufacturers They are still expected to comment on when they will launch vehicles with the new CarPlay.
More information should also be confirmed, including new features such as refueling the car with the system, as well as whether older models will have access to the new features in some way.
