Asthma and allergies: differences and coincidences

Confusion or a mixture of concepts, as well as symptoms, is common when we talk regarding asthma and allergies. In both cases the respiratory tract is affected, and for this reason they are sometimes confused, without forgetting that, as such, there is also allergic asthma. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In today’s health blog entry we are going to try to shed some light on the shadowy areas of these two terms, taking advantage of the fact that today, May 3, is World Asthma Day.

Dr. Carmen Mogío, head of the Allergology Service of the Ribera Povisa hospital, assures that assuming that allergies affect those who have asthma “is a mistake that is often made, because asthma is a pathology with various etiologies or causes , and only one of them is allergies.” There may be patients who are affected, but others who are not. “When we talk regarding respiratory allergy, we are referring not only to allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis, but also to allergic asthma, since allergies affect the entire respiratory tree, from the nasal passages to the bronchus,” she explains.

What is allergic asthma

Dr. Sandra Yago, a specialist in Allergology at the University Hospital of Torrejón, difference between “patients who have persistent underlying asthma, which may worsen during pollination seasons because they also have pollen allergies” and cases in which asthma manifests itself only seasonally “and its intensity varies depending on the allergy level of each person. This second assumption is what is considered allergic asthma. For Dr. Yago it is important that, if there is a suspicion of having an allergy to pollen or another allergen, “it is best to consult a specialist doctor to evaluate the symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment.”
