This is quite a fascinating and amazing discovery made by Krisztián Sárneczky, a Hungarian astronomer, last Friday. Working at the Piszkésteto station of the Konkoly observatory, the latter spotted an asteroid three meters wide… only two hours before reaching Earth, in the ocean north of Iceland.
It’s been dubbed 2022 EB5 and it’s only the fifth asteroid that’s been discovered on impact. More fear than harm. Because, given its small size, it quickly disintegrated into several parts when entering the atmosphere. Scientists also estimated that the asteroid was moving at a speed of 18.5 km/second.
For research purposes, the International Meteor Organization has already issued calls for testimonies, in case people saw a bright light in the area on Friday at 9:22 p.m. In Iceland, Daily Star suggests that some would have seen a lightning or heard a noise.
