After a generally gloomy year 2022 for the cinema, which reached historically low attendance levels in France, 2023 promises to be rich in productions, the masters in the field, namely Spielberg, Chazelle, Nolan or even Scorsese, having announced the release of films, each more enticing than the next. Enough to reconcile the public with the dark rooms?
1 French films
– “Asterix and Obelix: the Middle Empire” by Guillaume Canet
Vincent Cassel as César, Marion Cotillard as Cleopatra, Guillaume Canet as Asterix and Gilles Lellouche as Obélix, but also BigFlo and Oli, Angèle, McFly and Carlito, Jérôme Commandeur and Zlatan Ibrahimovic make up the XXL poster of this new opus of the adventures of the irreducible Gauls. This screen transposition by Guillaume Canet of the work of Goscinny and Uderzo will take the protagonists to China. Released February 1.
– “Alibi.com 2” by Philippe Lacheau
Philippe Lacheau reopens his agency “Alibi.com” for a final staging, supposed to save Greg from having to introduce Flo to his fiancée, his crook father and his ex-actress mother. The director and actor, as well as his team will present this new comedy in preview in many Breton cinemas on 21 and 22 January. Released February 8.
– « The Son » de Florian Zeller
After “The Father” in 2020, which won him the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, Florian Zeller adapts another of his plays for the screen. Still in English, and once again with a cast of stars (Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Anthony Hopkins), the film focuses this time on a father overwhelmed by the psychological distress of his 17-year-old son. Released March 1.
– “My crime” by François Ozon
Paris, in the 1930s. A young actress is accused of the murder of a famous producer. Acquitted thanks to a lawyer friend who pleads self-defense, Madeleine’s career takes off. François Ozon is accompanied by Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Rebecca Marder, Isabelle Huppert, Dany Boon and Fabrice Luchini for this dramatic comedy. Released March 8.
– “A difficult year” by Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache
The Toledano-Nakache duo, behind “Intouchables”, “Le sens de la fête” or even “Exceptions”, signs its return with a new comedy in which Jonathan Cohen and Pio Marmaï play two over-indebted men who integrate an ecological movement without real conviction. Released October 18.
– “Second tour” by Albert Dupontel
Albert Dupontel combines the talents of Cécile de France and Nicolas Marié, masterful in “Goodbye idiots”, in this new comedy with political overtones. In “Second Round”, the disgraced political journalist Miss Pove, placed in the football section, is finally chosen to follow the current presidential campaign and her main favorite: an heir to a powerful family, but a novice in politics, whom it has known less smooth in the past. Released October 25.
2 American movies
– “Babylon” by Damien Chazelle
The director of “La La Land” and “Whiplash” dives into the Los Angeles of the 20s and is accompanied for the occasion by a five-star cast: Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Tobey Maguire. At the time of the creation of Hollywood, and the transition from silent to talking, decadence and depravity invite themselves to the actors’ table. All to music by Justin Hurwitz. Released January 18.
– « The Fabelmans » de Steven Spielberg
At 76, Steven Spielberg delivers his most autobiographical film. “The Fabelmans” retraces Sammy Fabelman’s childhood and adolescence in Arizona, rocked by his dreams as a filmmaker. Released February 22.
– “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” by James Mangold
“Indy” is back! Fifteen years after Steven Spielberg’s last opus, it’s James Mangold’s turn to take on the adventures of the archaeologist played by Harrison Ford. This time he is accompanied by the excellent Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen. Released June 28.
– “Oppenheimer” de Christopher Nolan
One of the most anticipated films of 2023 is a biopic from Christopher Nolan. The father of “Inception”, “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk” (and many more) brings together Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Matt Damon, and retraces the exceptional life of Robert Oppenheimer, creator of the bomb atomic during World War II. Released July 19.
– “Barbie” by Greta Gerwig
The most famous doll now has a face, that of Margot Robbie. The actress embodies a Barbie deemed not “perfect” enough alongside Ryan Gosling in the next film by Greta Gerwig. Released July 19.
– “Dune, second part” by Denis Villeneuve
After a successful first film and six Oscars in his pocket, Denis Villeneuve delivers this year the second part of his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel. Zendaya and Thimothée Chalamet will be there again. A film that will delight science fiction fans. Released November 1.
– « Killers of the Flower Moon » de Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese tells the true story of the Osage Native American tribe in Oklahoma, several of whose members were murdered in the 1920s. Adapted from the eponymous book by David Grann, “Killers of the Flower Moon” brings together two of the favorite actors of the director of “Goodfellas”: Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. No specific release date.
3 And films shot in Brittany
– “Good Conduct” by Jonathan Barré
It is in Finistère, between Sein, Douarnenez and Brest, that Jonathan Barré, originally from Quimper, set up his camera for the shooting of his next feature film. He thus finds Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais, from the Palmashow, as well as Laure Calamy for a crazy police comedy. Released March 29.
– “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” and “The Three Musketeers: Milady” by Martin Bourboulon
Tour in Saint-Malo, the adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel by Martin Bourboulon is divided into two feature films. Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, Eva Green and François Civil star in both parts. Release of “D’Artagnan” on April 5 and “Milady” on December 13.
