Asterix and Cleopatra Original Drawing Auction: Legal Battle and Hollywood Parody

Despite the legal objection of Albert Uderzo’s daughter, an original drawing by the late “Asterix” illustrator is to be auctioned in Brussels on Sunday (11 a.m.). On offer is the original cover image of the comic “Asterix and Cleopatra”, a gouache drawing from 1963. The Millon auction house estimates the value of the drawing at 400,000 to 500,000 euros.

For the cover photo, Uderzo parodied the film poster for the Hollywood film “Cleopatra” with Elizabeth Taylor, which was then the most expensive film of all time. According to Millon, the seller is now the son of the long-time owner, who received it as a gift from Uderzo himself more than 50 years ago. Uderzo’s daughter Sylvie doubts this information and filed a lawsuit for unlawful possession or theft.
